OK KC 114 Restoration

I am currently doing a complete restoration of KC 114. I am estimating that this boat was built in 1968. It was equipped with a wood mast and boom, a fixed 30 degree rudder, and very few unusable fittings. I have cut the deck off, and am re-doing all under deck support structure (most likely being overbuilt, but I want this boat to last another 40 years), installing a new mast step and deck bearing, and upgrading to an alloy mast. I have gotten my deck mostly on now, and the restoration is going along fairly smoothly. I should have the boat done just in time to shut it down for the winter (mind you, out here on the West Coast, we can pretty well sail year round). I am hoping to have the grand re-unveiling at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club Fall Dinghy Regatta (see upcoming races for info) at the end of September.
I am also going to send before and after photos to Wooden Boat Magazine to have them put in their Launchings and Relaunchings section (try and drum up some other old OKers and get them interested in putting their boats back together). More info when I get it.

The deck is now on, and I am starting my fitout. Still have to paint the hull, but it has been primed, so it should only take a quick spash of paint to the hull, install the rudder fittings, and should be good to sail.

Hi Dean,
Inspirational set of pics! Your boat looks great with the new decks. Is the underdeck structure as the original or have you changed it? Also it would be really interesting to see how you did the mast step. Hope you put some nice big bolts in! I was alongside 1728 (70's built wooden O'Donnell) on Sunday when his bottom mast step came loose! Caused a truckload of damage as you might guess, and when he got it ashore it turned out it was held down by 4 wood screws! That was the last of our open meetings for the year so it's high time for a bit of maintenance for my boat too! I'm really looking forward to seeing some pics of KC114 sailing - can't imagine you've decided to wait till spring

Hey Dave,
I have started fitting her out, but I still have to give the bottom a quick coat of paint. Live has gotten in the way for the past few weeks, so I haven't had much time to finish up the project. I was hoping to have it all back together for the last week in September for the big fall dinghy regatta in Victoria, but couldn't get it done. Luckily with the weather we have here, I should be able to go sailing whenever it is done (we're lucky, while most others in the country are digging out the snow, we can be sailing).
I think I went a little overkill on my underdeck structure and mast step, but I don't want to have to do many repairs once it's done. The whole mast step structure was assembled with epoxy, screws, thru-bolts, Fir and Plywood. As well as thru-bolting thru the keel, I have screws thru the bottom panel on either side of the kell into the fir cross supports, with the 3/4" Marine plywood epoxied, thru bolted, and screwed to these cross supports. Like I said, probably overkill, but hey, that's typically the way I build things.
I have also added some floatation foam under the deck, in the bow compartment and around the centreboard trunk. Probably un-necessary, but after all the work I have done to the boat, I would rather not let it do a submarine impression.
I'll try and get some better pics of the mast step and other underdeck stuff and get them posted.
